Northern Uganda: Leaders ask govt to find lasting solution to cattle rustling
KIRA- Local leaders in Northern Uganda have advised the government to find a permanent solution to the Karimojong cattle raids that have left some people losing their lives.
Among others, the leaders from Acholi, Lango, and West Nile sub-regions called for more development projects such as construction of dams in the region and the bolstering of the disarmament exercise in the Karamoja Sub-region .
The leaders made the call in Oyam district during a special regional council meeting to eulogise the fallen Minister of State for Labour, Employment, and Industrial Relations, Charles Okello Engola Macodwogo.
Engola was shot dead over two weeks ago at his home at Kyanja, Nakawa division in Kampala by his bodyguard, Private Wilson Sabiti. Sabiti later turned the gun on himself.
Hundreds of mourners, LC5 chairpersons, resident district commissioners, the chief administrative officers, Members of Parliament among others paid tribute to the former Oyam North legislator last Thursday.
The Alebtong district LC5 chairperson, David Kennedy Odongo said Engola contributed a lot to fighting cattle rustlers and the Lord`s Resistance Army in Northern Uganda.
Dila Benson, the Oyam district LC5 chairperson said though there is peace in the country, it is important for government to intervene and stop cattle rustling in the Northern region of the country.
There has been a recent wave of cattle raids in Agago, Kitgum, Otuke, and Alebtong districts by the suspected Karamojong worriers who possess illegal guns.
A total of 273 head of cattle have been stolen by the suspected rustlers in Otuke since January, according to the North Police spokesperson, Jimmy Patrick Okema.
According to the police report, the incident happened mostly in Ogor, Olilim and Ogwete sub-counties bordering Karamoja Sub-region.
