Mbale City floods death toll rises to 17

MBALE: The death toll of the Mbale City flood victims has increased to 17 people.  This comes after nine more bodies were recovered on Monday morning from River Nabuyonga in Nabuyonga ward, Northern City Division in Mbale City.

This brings to 17, the number of bodies recovered following the Saturday night disaster.

The nine were traveling in a super custom, which plunged into the river following the heavy rains that pounded the town Mbale City on Saturday evening to Sunday morning.

The Elgon regional Police Spokesperson, Rogers Taitika, said more nine bodies have been recovered from the water today.

He said Police and locals have teamed up to retrieve the missing bodies.

The Mbale City Resident Commissioner, Ahamda Washaki said that there are fears that many more people could have died from the floods and their bodies still in the water.

He said that there is a need to deploy the police marine unit to search for the missing bodies.

Police said the bodies were taken to the city mortuary pending postmortem.
