NGO to train Kole oil seed farmers in good agricultural practices

KOLE– In a bid to help oil seed farmers boost production, Women Grow Uganda [WGU], a community-based organisation, has partnered with Alito Joint Cooperative Society and JEROMA Farmers’ Collection Centre to help farmers adopt good farming practices.

The extension services will mainly target farmers producing sunflower, soybean, and sim-sim so that they are able to produce high quality yields.

The women’s group will also help farmers in securing better farm inputs, post-harvest handling and use of technology.

According to Alice Dinna, Coordinator WGU in Kole district, several farmers lack knowledge in crop management, something she said makes them incur losses at the end of the season.

“Farmers in both cooperatives and other groups need a helping hand in accessing quality extension services. That is why Women Grow Uganda has come on board to work with the existing partners to lift the local farmer out there,’’ she said.

She said if such support is rendered to the farmers, household incomes will be boosted and farming, which is the backbone of the region and the country at large, will be highly valued.

Emmanuel Apoc, JEROMA, Coordinator lauded the initiative, saying that farmers, produce will increase in both quality and quantity.

“Post-harvest handling and technology to meet the international standard has been challenging several farmers, but now the initiative will address these challenges,” he observed.

WGU is a group of farmers involved in livestock, growers, homesteaders, and urban backyard garden producers who have the desire to connect and unite Ugandan women in all forms of agriculture.

The goal of the organisation is to create opportunities for women to network and grow into sustainable business and food producers to address food security and economic empowerment.
