New market opened in Masindi town, residents to be given priority

MASINDI – Masindi district local government has opened a new market in Kirasa 1 Cell in Central Masindi Municipality where priority will be given to residents in a bid to boost their incomes as they trade.

The market was launched by Emmy Ngaburano, the Masindi Resident District Commissioner [RDC]. It sits on approximately two acres.

Haji Nuru Mbambaali Njuki, Ngaburano, the deputy RDC asked the residents of Masindi municipality to embrace it.

“First priority should be given to the residents of this place because this is an opportunity. People from other places should also be considered but they shouldn’t dominate. It’s bad to get such an opportunity and the residents fail to benefit,” said Ngaburano.

He asked the residents to use the market to boost their household incomes by selling their products in the market.

Ronald Kyomuhendo Businge, the Mayor of Masindi Municipality said, the establishment of another market in the Central Division would lead to the expansion of their revenue base.

He asked the residents to support the development of the market by bringing in items to sell in the market.

“As residents of this place, let’s apply for stalls and erect lockups to beautify this place. Priority should be given to the residents first,” he emphasised.

Apparently, two market shades and a three-stance latrine have been constructed at the site.

The market has been put at a former garbage collection area which was shifted to Kikwanana Cell in Nyanghya division to pave way for the development of the town.

The people who have so far been considered for the stalls asked the municipal authorities to help them grade the area to enable them to establish stalls with ease.

John Kasaija, the Municipal Engineer pledged to do the necessary to ensure that the developers are helped, and the area is graded.

Masindi Municipality town clerk Deo Kabugo, said so far 160 people have applied for stalls in the newly created market.

The government also plans to construct Shs 24 billion market under the Market and Agriculture Trade Improvement Programme [MATIP 2], with the design already done.

According to Kabugo, the market being constructed at Kirasa 1 will host vendors who are going to be relocated from central market due to the construction which is expected to start soon.

“The vendors from central market are going to be shifted to Boma grounds. But this place is small we expect some of them to come here,” Kabugo added.

Isaac Bongomin, the Chairperson LCIII central division asked the developers to construct the lockups in accordance with the municipal physical planning to have order.

Amuza Kabaka, the LC1 Chairperson Kirasa II Cell asked the municipal authorities to ensure that the lighting system, water and the store are put in place.

Abudul Erias Moga, the Chairperson LCI Kirasa 2 Cell asked the municipal authorities to ensure that the low-income earners get stalls.

“You shouldn’t consider only people with money. Don’t look at only money but also people with a small income.

The residents were excited over the market saying it’s going to boost development in the area.
