Netted: Principal Cooperatives Officer Kavundira Arraigned on Fraud Charges

Kavundira is accused of conspiring with his co-accused, who were previously remanded, to divert over Shs 3.4 billion.

KAMPALA, June 24, 2024 – In a significant move against corruption, Leonard Kavundira, the Principal Cooperatives Officer in the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Cooperative [MTIC], has been arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala. The charges against him include conspiracy to defraud the government of Uganda.

The Directorate of Public Prosecutions [DPP] and the Criminal Investigations Directorate [CID] have been working collaboratively on this case. Kavundira is accused of conspiring with his co-accused, who were previously remanded, to divert over Shs 3.4 billion. This substantial sum was intended for war loss compensation by the government of Uganda to Buyaka Growers Cooperative Society Limited. Instead, it was allegedly redirected for their personal use.
The authorities involved in the investigation and arraignment have been vocal about their commitment to addressing corruption within governmental agencies. He and his co-accused, who were earlier remanded, diverted over UGX3.4B meant for war loss compensation by @GovUganda to Buyaka Growers Cooperative Society Limited for personal use. He has been remanded until 9th July 2024. #ExposeTheCorrupt”
Leonard Kavundira has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance scheduled for July 9, 2024. The Anti-Corruption Court is expected to continue its rigorous examination of the evidence presented against him and his co-accused.
