Nebbi PDM beneficiaries task gov’t on roads

NEBBI – The Parish Development Model [PDM] beneficiaries in Nebbi Municipality have tasked government to tarmac Nebbi –Goli, Paidha Vura road and others to facilitate business.

They said the poor road networks will affect PDM activities like in any other government programmes, which failed to have a great impact on communities.

The beneficiaries amplified their voices at the launch of PDM funds disbursement in Nebbi Municipality over the week by the deputy PDM national coordinator Jovrine Kalisa where 306 beneficiaries received cash messages from Centenary Bank on their mobile phones.

Jacob Okumu, a resident of Nebbi town said, though the government is fighting poverty by giving seed capital to citizens, the country still has challenges of poor roads, which must be worked as cited in the PDM.

“We all have business ideas but, the challenge is that, our roads are in poor state which can’t allow us to transact businesses smoothly. If government wants the PDM programme to excel, the intent-district networks should be a priority“, Okumu said.

Another beneficiary Alice Fuambe said, she is not only scared of bad roads in the district but also the multiple taxes, which said, have reduced the profit margins, hence creating more poverty.

“Government has good programmes for us but they have failed to sort out the issue of poor road network, inadequate electricity distribution and multiples taxes on businesses. Will government expect good returns from PDM beneficiaries if all these challenges are not addressed,” Fuambe said.

The LC3 chairperson ThaTha Division, Jacklyn Opar said, Nebbi-Jukia Paidha, one of the major roads that link Wes Nile to Northern Uganda, has been in poor state, and that government should work on it under the PDM  to facilitate inter-district trade.

“We have lost many lives on Nebbi –Jukia Paidha road and if not worked on, it will hamper the progress of businesses because both Ugandans and Congolese use the same road,” Opar said.

However, Kalisa urged the district leaders to inform the works ministry of the bad status of Nebbi –Jukia, Paidha road such that it is worked on to benefit the PDM, beneficiaries.

She added that since the government wants to eradicate poverty by all means in the communities, the issue of bad roads would be worked on under the second pillar of PDM, which talks about infrastructure and economic services.
