Nebbi Catholic Diocese embraces digital communication

NEBBI – Nebbi Catholic Diocese has embraced a digital revolution where top leaders of the institution will now reach out to the faithful via phone messages.

According to the diocese’s bishop, Rt. Rev. Raphael P’mony Wokorach, they will no longer have to physically deliver the messages to the faithful.

This is after the diocese got a digital messaging App that the bishop said will create more time for productive work at various parishes.

He noted that the app developed by Cente-Tech would improve agriculture by mobilising community members, and boosting sensitisation on girl child education, health, and church programmes as he interacts with church leaders at lower levels.

According to the bishop, short message sending [SMS], unstructured supplementary service data [USSD], email, and interactive voice responses [IVR] will be employed. He added that all catholic parishes in the diocese would be added to the platform later for easy communication.

He urged Roman Catholics in the area to adopt the new digital transformation where messages will be sent on mobile phones.

“Technology is catching up with us and as church leaders, we need to adopt digital messaging for easy access and cost reduction,” the bishop said.

The parish priest of St. Daniel Comboni Akanyo, Fr. Denis Ocanda said they would target the youth with messages on teenage pregnancies and early child marriages.

He added that the digital information flow would bridge the gap between church leaders and community members.

Centre –Tech head of production, business development, and customer experience, Steven Kirenga said digital messaging is helping churches to reach wider audiences.

“The digital platform is rapidly becoming a critical lifeline to streamline and sustain access to communication through mobile devices to the communities,” Kirenga said.

He said Nebbi diocese is one of the first 19 dioceses in the country to take up digital messaging services such that community members are reached with first-hand information.
