NDA bans a local health energy product manufactured in Kasese district

KASESE – The National Drug Authority (NDA) has banned the manufacture of “The Stronger Weekend Products” by Thembomar Investment in Mpondwe, Kasese district.

According to Abiaz Rwamwiri, the Public Relations Manager of NDA working with Uganda Police raided and searched their factory in Mpondwe, Kasese district and collected samples of “The Stronger Weekend-Opaque Beer that tested sildenafil citrate.

Other products manufactured, distributed and sold by Thembomar Investment in Mpondwe, Kasese that are adulterated with high contents of sildenafil citrate include; The Stronger Weekend Pineapple Still Table Wine, Batch No. SW003-20-20-TOMI [UNBS QC No. 1429-21/22], The Stronger Weekend-Opaque Beer, Batch No. SW001-21-TOMI [UNBS QC No. 1430-21/22] and “The Stronger Weekend-Opaque Beer, Batch No. SW001-21-TOMI [UNBS QC No. 1433-21/22].

“This is to inform the public that the National Drug Authority (NDA) undertook a laboratory analysis of the (The Stronger Weekend Pineapple)  and confirmed the product is adulterated with Sildenafil Citrate,” Rwamwiri explained.

Sildenafil citrate is a drug for erectile dysfunction which must be used under strict prescription by qualified medical personnel.  It has serious side effects which include extreme abdominal complications, respiratory and heart problems, renal failure and sometimes leading to coma, and even death.

However, the said products were authoritatively certified by Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), that NDA warned to take a regulatory action.

“We have advised Uganda National Bureau of Standards to take a regulatory action and ensure that the manufacturer and their distributors are compelled to recall all the supplied batches of these products with immediate effect for distribution,” NDA’s Communications Manager said.

“The public is strongly warned against using “The Stringer Weekend Products.” NDA hereby directs bars, guest houses, shops, supermarkets and the general merchandise shops to stop sale or stocking of this product with immediate effect,” Rwamwiri added in a press release.

NDA also directs the manufacturers of The Stronger Weekend Products to stop production and distribution of such products with immediate effect.

Elly Nyesiga, a dealer of general merchandise in Mbarara City says, NDA’s ban of a single product in Kasese and leaving many health drinks approved by UNBS mushrooming in the market is useless.

“NDA has done its work but this looks like an advert because men have been drinking so many health products just because we tell them that it gives power in bed without even any approval. Now, what about The Stronger Weekend-Opaque Beer which was approved and certified by UNBS?” Nyesiga said.

However, Rwamwiri explained that the struggle has just begun saying that more action is going to take place.

“We call upon the public to report such suspicious products on the market that could be adulterated to National Drug Authority for analysis as we work together to safeguard public health,” Rwamwiri emphasized.
