NaSARRI resumes internship training in agronomy and related fields

SERERE, May 27,  2025 –– The National Semi-Arid Resources Research Institute [ NaSARRI ] has resumed internship training for students in agronomy and crop science, following a years-long suspension due to staffing shortages and limited facilities.

Until recently, NaSARRI had only been hosting postgraduate students pursuing Master’s degrees in agriculture and related disciplines. However, the institute has now reopened its doors to undergraduates, beginning with a cohort of at least 30 interns from the Serere-based Agributec Institute.

The students have been admitted to a 60-day hands-on training programme designed to enhance their practical knowledge and skills in agricultural research. The training will cover areas such as agronomy, breeding, plant pathology, crop and soil science, livestock technologies, and more.

The interns will be supervised by a team of experts led by John Obuo, Head of Internship Training at NaSARRI. They will receive practical training in agricultural production and benefit from personalised guidance and support throughout the programme.

The internship will also include mentorship by experienced professionals and opportunities to acquire specific technical skills across fieldwork, laboratory research, screenhouse activities, and administrative tasks.

Speaking during the orientation of the interns, Dr David Kalule Okello, Director of Research at NaSARRI, urged the students to remain committed and make full use of the available learning opportunities.

“If you want to benefit from your time here, you must be serious and focused. There is no room for mediocrity or laziness—science waits for no one,” Dr Okello said.

The industrial training programme aims to expose students to real-world agricultural research environments, helping bridge the gap between theoretical classroom knowledge and practical field application. It also fosters the development of essential professional skills, including communication, work ethic, and report writing.

In addition to its internship programme, NaSARRI continues to host around 7,000 primary and secondary school pupils annually on educational agricultural field study tours. This initiative underscores the institute’s commitment to agricultural education and capacity building for young people, contributing to a more sustainable and skilled agricultural sector.
