LIRA – The National Agricultural Research Organisation [NARO] and Caritas Uganda, a faith-based non-governmental oragnisation have trained 150 farmers in the Lango Sub-region in basic agronomy, climate-smart agriculture, and livestock management.
The farmers trained were picked from four districts in the Lango sub-region districts of Alebtong, Otuke, Dokolo, and Oyam.
The director of Ngetta Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute [Ngetta ZARDI], Dr. Laban Turyegenda said they have entered into collaboration with Caritas to help in the mobilisation of farmers to produce seeds for multiplication.
The farmers, according to Turyagyenda, were also trained in aquaculture, mushroom growing, agroforestry, micro irrigation, apiary, pastures management and general agronomy.
Closing the training on Friday at Ngetta ZARDI, Turyegenda said farmers in the Lango and Acholi sub-regions are still facing challenges in realising high production and productivity.
He noted some of the challenges as lack of enough agricultural extension workers in the communities, lack of knowledge in using fertilisers, poor storage facilities, and post-harvest handling.
“We have signed a memorandum of understanding with Caritas for five years and we expect them to help in mobilising farmers so that we improve on that,” he said.
He said other challenges include lack of knowledge to control pest and disease, limited research, soil degradation and limited skills in utilising fertilisers.
“Farmers don’t know what to because different crops requires different fertilisers,” Turyegenda said, adding that they need to support farmers in post-harvest handling, especially storage and drying.
Fr. Velento Opio, the vicar general of Lira Diocese urged farmers to apply the knowledge received to improve their farming and generate income for their households.
