NARO advises Lango farmers to embrace fish farming

LIRA, July 4, 2024 – The National Agricultural Research Organisation [NARO] has urged farmers in Lango Subregion to embrace fish farming to address the local market demand and for its nutritional value.

Dr Laban Turyagenda, Director of Ngetta Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute [Ngetta ZARDI] said there is a big market and high demand for fish in all of Northern Uganda.

He was last Saturday speaking at the training of over 900 farmers on five different commodities which include fish farming, livestock [dairy] goats, soya bean farming, cassava, and beekeeping at Ngetta in Lira City.

“The demand is very high in the sub-region but the production is still very low and above all there is a market and we need to increase production because we have the capacity to do that,” he said.

He added that many farmers in Lango Sub-region have limited knowledge of both fish farming and livestock farming, and therefore need to be trained if they are to prosper in these enterprises.

He added that with support from NARO, they are more than ready to support farmers to boost both fish, and livestock production.

He added that fish has many advantages such as high nutritional value [source of protein], and economic values, adding that  Lango Sub-region has a lot of waterbodies suitable for fish farming. Some of the waterbodies in the region include lakes Kwania, and Kyoga.

On his part, Frank Mugabe, Head of Communications at NARO said there has been a protracted campaign to develop the dairy sector and that it is the reason why many farmers are interested in livestock farming.

He added that there are farmers who doing engaged in dairy farming today than in the past because government has been sensitising farmers on the same.
