Nairobi to host next African Fertiliser Summit
KAMPALA, November 1, 2023 – The Kenyan capital will host the African Fertiliser and Soil Health Summit from November 5 to 7, 2023.
Organised by the African Union Commission [AUC], through the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, this summit will allow industrialists, government officials, farmers, funding agencies, to highlight the crucial role of fertiliser and soil health in stimulating sustainable growth on the continent.
All stakeholders are expected to produce concrete proposals to improve the productivity of small farms and an action plan to facilitate access to fertilisers.
African heads of state, senior government officials, political decision-makers, private sector actors and civil society organisations are expected to attend this Summit. Other participants will include representatives of agricultural organisations and development agencies, including NGOs, academics and scientists, as well as representatives of major donor organizations.
According to officials, the usage of fertilisers in agriculture in Africa varies greatly among countries. In 2021, Egypt used around 414 kilogrammes of fertiliser per hectare, the highest amount in the continent. On the other hand, South Sudan and the Central African Republic consumed 0.02 and 0.23kg of fertiliser per hectare of cropland area, respectively. The use of fertilisers in Africa averaged at around 25.6kg per hectare of cropland area, a very low figure compared to the world average of about 118.6kg that year.
