Nabbanja urges Muslim community in Uganda to embrace PDM 

HOIMA-The Muslim Community in Uganda have been challenged to embrace the Parish Developmental Model [PDM] if they are to fight household poverty.

Robinah Nabbanja, Uganda’s Prime Minister, said the PDM, now being readied, is a game-changer that will transform poor households as they move from subsistence to the money economy.

She urged leaders of the different religious denominations in the country to mobilise their followers for the PDM.  She said religious leaders across the country can play a crucial role in sensitising the faithful on government’s poverty eradication programmes.

Nabbanja made the call while presiding over the fundraising ceremony to raise funds for the construction of Bunyoro-Tooro Regional Muslim headquarters at Bwikya hill in Hoima East Division over the weekend.

The fundraising drive saw Shs 198, 908,000 collected in cash and pledges was raised towards the construction project.

Nabbanja explained that under the PDM, targeted Ugandans will be able to get money at an interest rate of 6 percent. She tasked leaders in the region and the country at large to own the PDM on which government intends to spend hundreds of billions of shillings.

She urged the implementers of the PDM to be transparent to ensure that the poor people benefit from the programme, warning that those who will misuse the funds will be apprehended.

She contributed Shs 20 million towards the construction project and promised she would request President Museveni to support the project.

The Mufti of Uganda, Sheik Shaban Mubajje commended government for supporting Muslims on different developments and promised that he would encourage Muslim leaders to senstise the faithful to embrace government projects aimed at improving household incomes.

He also commanded Nabbajaja for her contribution towards the construction of  Bunyoro-Tooro Regional Muslim headquarters, adding that Uganda Supreme Muslim Council has embarked on establishing offices in different regions. He said Bunyoro-Tooro region has taken the lead by organisng a fundraising drive for the same cause.

The planned two-storied building once finished, will comprise of education centre, the district headquarters, regional offices, conference hall, a library, counseling and guidance hall, among others.

Bunyoro-Tooro Muslim region comprises of the districts of Hoima, Kiryandogo, Buliisa, Masindi, Kikuube, Kagadi, Kibaale, Kakumiro, Kyegegwa, Kasese, Kabarole, Kyenjojo, Bundibugyo and Hoima city among others.
