Nabbanja launches relocation of landslide victims in Bulambuli

MBALE CITY, December 12, 2024 – Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, yesterday arrived in Bugisu Subregion for a three-day working visit aimed at overseeing the relocation of residents from disaster-prone areas in Buluganya Subcounty, Bulambuli district after recent landslides killed some of the residents.

During a stakeholders’ meeting held at Malukhu in Mbale City and attended by local leaders, area Members of Parliament, and security officials, Nabbanja emphasised the urgent need to relocate people living in high-risk areas to already gazetted safe zones.

The meeting resolved to expedite the relocation process to protect vulnerable communities.

The Prime Minister announced that the government has allocated Shs 50 billion to resettle over 5,000 households. Beneficiaries will each receive Shs 10 million cash and two acres of land in Bunambutye, Bulambuli district, following a screening process to identify those most in need.

“We have a presidential directive to force and move our people from these risky areas. It’s painful to see lives lost in such tragedies,” Nabbanja said.

State Minister for Karamoja as well as Sironko district Woman MP, Nambozo Florence Nambozo concurred with the Prime Minister about relocating people as fast as possible. “We need to relocate our people from disaster areas now before the situation worsens,” she said.

The government’s intervention comes in response to growing concerns about the safety of communities living on the delicate slopes of Mt. Elgon in the districts of Bulambuli, Bududa, Mbale, Sironko, Manafwa, and Namisindwa.
