NAADS trains youth leaders on dairy farming

LIRA – A total of 67 youth leaders in the Lango and Acholi sub-regions have been trained on the management of dairy cow, poultry and pigs by National Agricultural Advisory services [NAADS].

The training was held at Ngetta Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (NZARDI) focused on managing livestock as a business in the preparation to receive 540 heifers pledged by President Yoweri Museveni.

The target of NAADS secretariat is to support youth leaders in 135 districts, 10 cities and 31 municipalities across the country with heifers.

The youth were also skilled on identification of pests and disease, mixing of feeds and milking according to Dr Laban Turyagenda, the Director of NZARDI.

Dr Turyagenda wondered why there is a high level of poverty in northern Uganda yet there are a lot of opportunities in learning new technologies and engaging in productive farming.

The northern Youth MP Boniface Okot, pledged to continue engaging NAADS and other government agencies to provide support to youth for economic empowerment.

“I have been engaging with NAADS to support youth council members and I am happy that this has come to pass,” he said.

The Resident District Commissioner [RDC], Bategana Bakole said, under the National Resistance Movement [NRM] the cost of government producing coffee, tea, milk, sugar has gone up as compared to the past governments because of resounding leadership.

Bategana advised the youth to take lead in transforming the country and improve the lives of citizens.

He cautioned the youth against selling off the heifers saying, the security team will monitor after the distribution in May,2022.

Denis Otim Otto, Lira district Principal Assistant Secretary, warned the youth against the wrong mindset of being impatient and wanting to get rich fast.

He advised them to start small and progress slowly and be consistent because the cow that will be given to them is their capital and they should take good care of them to produce and multiply.
