Museveni urges universities, others to prioritise skills development

FORT PORTAL CITY –– President Yoweri Museveni has urged universities and other higher education institutions in Uganda to focus on equipping students with practical skills, particularly in the fields of science and technology, to enhance their employability and contribute to the economic development of the country.

In a speech delivered by Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja at the 20th graduation ceremony of Uganda Pentecostal University [UPU] in Muchwa, Fort Portal City, on Saturday, Museveni emphasised that a society progresses when it masters higher levels of science, technology, and managerial skills.

He advised graduates, especially those from humanities disciplines, to seek additional practical skills that align with the demands of the job market. He reassured them that regardless of their field of study, it is not too late to build on their education by acquiring relevant competencies outside their primary disciplines.

“I encourage you to pursue skilling opportunities that will enhance your employability, especially in the private sector, which is increasingly driven by science and technology,” Museveni said.

The President highlighted that practical skills could help graduates secure jobs or establish their own businesses in the shortest time possible.

He congratulated the graduates on their achievements and cautioned them against reckless lifestyles, including excessive drinking and irresponsible sexual behaviour.

Deputy Chief Justice Buteera’s message to young people

The Deputy Chief Justice, Richard Buteera, who represented Chief Justice Alfonse Owinyi-Dollo, reflected on the uniqueness of today’s young generation, often referred to as Gen Z.

He noted that this generation heavily relies on the internet and smartphones, which, if not managed well, could result in reduced human interaction and increased stress.

Buteera urged the graduates to embrace adaptability, innovation, and ethical leadership, asserting that the careers of the future will not solely depend on academic degrees but on critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

“You are entering a rapidly changing global employment landscape where your success will be determined by your ability to adapt, lead, and create solutions. Be job creators, not just job seekers,” he advised.

Government support for UPU’s infrastructure development

The Vice Chancellor of UPU, Prof. Perucy Ntambirweki, informed Prime Minister Nabbanja that the university is in the process of constructing its permanent campus and requested government support for the project. In response, Museveni contributed Shs 20 million, while the Office of the Prime Minister pledged Shs 10mln towards the construction efforts.

During the ceremony, 466 students received certificates, diplomas, and degrees.

About UPU

UPU is a private university that began its operations in 2001 as Grotius School of Law and Professional Studies, with a campus located in Mengo, a neighbourhood in the Lubaga Division of Western Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. The school initially operated as part of another university.

In 2004, the Uganda National Council for Higher Education [UNCHE] advised the institution to apply for a separate licence. After resolving disagreements between the university and UNCHE through the courts, UPU was officially licensed by UNCHE on 9th August 2005.

Over the past two decades, UPU has made significant strides in higher education, solidifying its position as a leading institution in Fort Portal. The university has continuously expanded its academic programmes to meet the evolving needs of students and now offers a wide range of undergraduate degrees, diplomas, and certificate courses in fields such as Business Administration, Information Technology, Social Sciences, Journalism and Media Management, and Law, among others.
