AMUDAT, October 31, 2025 — The National Resistance Movement-NRM presidential candidate, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged to launch an ambitious plan to galvanise the agricultural sector in Amudat district and the broader Karamoja Sub-region.
During a presidential campaign rally held at Kalas Girls Primary School on Wednesday, Museveni urged residents to dismiss long-standing claims of arid and infertile land, emphasising the region’s vast potential for wealth creation through farming.
Accompanied by the First Lady Janet Kataha Museveni, the president highlighted the inherent fertility of Karamoja’s soil, citing numerous successful local farmers whose endeavors underscore the region’s agricultural viability.
His core message centered on empowering the farmers and addressing key challenges that hinder their progress.
A cornerstone of Museveni’s agricultural strategy for his next term of office is the proposed establishment of a joint support fund specifically for farmers.
This fund, he explained, will be operationalised through farmers’ respective cooperatives and associations, tackling one of the most persistent issues faced by producers: exploitation by middlemen.
“This fund will primarily be used for the transportation of your produce and livestock to better markets,” Museveni articulated during his address. “By enabling farmers to reach markets directly, we can ensure they receive fair prices for their hard work and are no longer at the mercy of exploitative intermediaries.”
He detailed that the specifics of how the fund will be operationalised would be a priority in the next government. Linked to this agricultural vision is a comprehensive strategy for enhanced water access.
Museveni said he would roll out a cost-effective water distribution system for individual households in Amudat district, designed to further boost wealth creation by ensuring reliable water for small-scale irrigation and livestock, complementing existing communal boreholes and water dams.
He highlighted significant strides already made in water infrastructure development within Amudati. These include the commissioning of a solar-powered irrigation system at Katotin, the construction of 12 valley tanks, and the installation of two wind-powered abstraction systems.
Furthermore, major capacity projects like the Kosike Valley Dam, boasting a capacity of 2.7 billion liters in Kosike Subcounty, and the Kaechom Valley Dam, with 1.8 billion liters of water capacity in Karita Subcounty, are testament to the ongoing commitment.
Museveni further announced that other large valley dams and solar-powered irrigation systems are currently under construction, with a 1.4 billion-liter Lowoyakur Dam and associated irrigation schemes soon to be commissioned.
He underscored his administration’s unwavering commitment to scaling up water for production across Amudati district, recognising it as a fundamental enabler of agricultural prosperity.
Recognising the critical role of infrastructure in supporting agricultural value chains, Museveni also addressed the long-standing issue of poor road networks impacting business and movement in Karamoja.
He issued a stern caution to the Ministry of Works and Transport, instructing them to ensure that all road maintenance programmes are comprehensive, incorporating proper drainage channels and routine maintenance plans.
He said improved roads are vital to ensure that the produce transported with the new support fund reaches markets efficiently and cost-effectively.
Rallying the people of Amudat district, Museveni urged them to vote for him as president and all NRM flag bearers in the general elections slated for January 2026, promising that these planned interventions would collectively transform the socio-economic landscape of the region through funding the agriculture sector.
Museveni, the incumbent, is running against Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform [NUP], Nathan Nandala Mafabi of Forum for Democratic Change, and Gregory Mugisha Muntu of Alliance for National Transformation [ANT], among others who want to be elected the next president of Uganda.
