Museveni flags off first powdered milk consignment to Algeria

The development follows an official meeting on December 13, 2024 at State Lodge Nakasero, where President Museveni hosted Ahmed Attaf, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and special envoy of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune

ENTEBBE, June 3, 2025 – President Yoweri Museveni has officially flagged off the first shipment of powdered milk destined for Algeria, marking a major milestone in Uganda’s dairy export sector.

The flag-off ceremony took place on Thursday at State House Entebbe and was attended by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, led by Minister Frank Tumwebaze, alongside representatives from Brookside Limited. The initial consignment comprises four containers, equivalent to 500 metric tonnes of powdered milk.

This shipment forms part of a larger export totalling 2,100 metric tonnes of high-quality milk powder, valued at over US$ 8 million. The deal follows bilateral negotiations and a memorandum of understanding [MoU] signed during President Museveni’s visit to Algeria in March 2023. The agreement opened Algerian markets to Ugandan products, including coffee and dairy.

Minister Tumwebaze praised the development and congratulated Brookside and the wider dairy industry on the achievement.
“Algeria is a market we’ve been targeting for some time. When President Museveni visited the country in 2023, one of the key outcomes was the MoU that paved the way for our coffee and milk exports. I congratulate Brookside, the dairy sector, and our farmers on this significant breakthrough,” he said.

Brookside Africa Limited’s Director of Finance, Kennedy Gatheru, said the partnership with Algeria would unlock broader export potential for Uganda.
“This marks the beginning of many opportunities,” he said, thanking President Museveni for his role in facilitating the deal.
“Thanks to your personal intervention, we are confident in our ability to secure additional export markets for a wide range of our dairy products,” he added.

The development follows an official meeting on December 13, 2024 at State Lodge Nakasero, where President Museveni hosted Ahmed Attaf, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and special envoy of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. During the meeting, Museveni welcomed the growing cooperation between Uganda and Algeria and expressed appreciation for the tangible progress made in implementing bilateral agreements.

Minister Attaf informed Museveni then that Algeria intends to redirect its annual US$ 700 million milk import budget to Uganda, citing the superior quality of Uganda’s fresh milk.
