MASINDI – The management, staff, and students of Uganda Technical College Kyema [UTC Kyema] in Masindi district are excited after MTN Uganda in partnership with Enabel, a Belgian-based organisation, donated Shs 80 million ICT equipment to the college.

The equipment includes 10 computers, power stabilisers, one year of paid internet, and tables among other items will boost the college’s ICT resource centre.

Receiving the equipment on behalf of the institution at the end of last week, Francis Kyomuhendo, the college’s governing council chairperson, commended MTN Uganda and Enabel for extending a helping hand to the institution, saying the equipment will boost digital learning among the students.

“We are grateful to our partners for improving the digitalisation of the school. It is going to greatly improve the performance of learners in the areas of ICT. Most of the courses need support from ICT,” Kyomuhendo noted.

He encouraged the people from Bunyoro Sub-region to embrace the college, noting that there is no need to take children to distant institutions, saying the institution has all that is required to enable students to learn and pass.

Handing over the equipment, Andrew Tusubira the regional commercial head MTN Uganda said they have supported Hoima Business School and Kasese Polytechnic with the same facilities.

“We are doing this to improve the learning skills of students. We also need to bridge inequalities in accessing vocational education. We are also doing this to boost the much-needed ICT skills,” explained Tusubira.

Bart Cornille, a representative of Enabel, said that digitalisation is a cross-cutting issue, which is much needed in different institutions.

“The library has now accessed different resources including books and computers which will enable e-learning. Students can now learn online by accessing YouTube. Students should use this facility as much as possible to do research,” Cornille said.

The function to hand over the ICT equipment was graced by Adolf Kato, the acting district education officer Masindi who hailed government for committing to skill Ugandans by establishing such an institution in the area.

He called upon the learners to embrace science subjects to be able to join such institutions.

“Science is the way to go because you can’t get skills without science. Embrace the study of science so that you become more useful,” said Kato.

Robert Abiya Owili, the deputy chief administrative officer Masindi who presided over the function encouraged the people of Masindi district to take advantage of the institution now that it has a fully-fledged ICT resource centre.

“A graduate from an institution like this doesn’t become a job seeker he can easily be absorbed in the job market, or start his own job. The only way to compete in the job market is by having ICT skills,” he said.
