Museveni donates 14 tractors to Masindi groups

MASINDI, September 23, 2024 — President Yoweri Museveni, has donated 14 tractors to religious groups, farmer groups, youth, and Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies [SACCOs] in Bunyoro Subregion to boost agricultural production through mechanisation.

Museveni donated the farm machinery on Friday during his visit to Masindi district. The President was in the district at the invitation of Balaam Barugahara, State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs.

He asked the beneficiaries of the equipment to use them well to fight household poverty. Museveni emphasised the need for leaders to sensitise the people on improving household incomes.

“You need to put much emphasis on household income. Mobilise people to embrace PDM because it’s the only solution to household poverty. Every year we send Shs 100 million to the Parish level under the PDM [Parish Development Model]. Next time when I come, I want to find good results. Fighting poverty should be a priority and ensure that you focus on livestock farming, fruit growing and coffee. You just need to concentrate on basics and the rest will be much easier,” he said.

Meanwhile, livestock farmers in Kijunjubwa asked the President to help them get connected to the national grid, saying that they have a lot of milk but sometimes it goes bad due to lack of electricity.

“If we get electricity, we will be able to add value to our milk,” Kaarole Mujemano, a prominent farmer explained.

In his response, Museven promised to ensure that Kijunjubwa and Kimengo subcounties are connected to the national grid.

Speaking of behalf of the LC1s and 2s, Fred Byarufu the LCI Chairperson Central Cell in Masinldi town asked Museveni to support their 14 SACCOs they have formed across the district.

He explained that they formed the SACCOs on the advice of minister  Barugahara. “We request for a boost to these SACCOs such that we are able to grow them to greater heights,” he appealed.

Barugahara explained that so far 14 SACCOs for LCI and 2 chairpersons have been formed across the entire district.

Pledges

Cosmas Byaruhanga, the Masindi district LCV Chairperson used this opportunity to remind the Museveni about the presidential pledges which he hasn’t fulfilled in the district.

The pledges include the construction of Masindi -Rwensororo  road which connects Masindi and Kyankwanzi district, construction of St Joseph Kikingura Memorial Secondary School in Bwijanga Subcounty, construction of Nyantonzi Catholic Church and Nyantonzi Church of Uganda which were destroyed during the war that brought the National Resistance Movement [ NRA] in power in January 1986.

Key priorities

Among the key priorities Byaruhanga asked Museveni to help with the construction of Masindi Hospital which is in a pathetic situation, construction of a modern market under the Uganda Support to Municipalities Infrastructure Development program [USMID], and installing streets in Masindi town.

He also asked the president to look into the issue of fluctuating prices especially sugarcane and maize whose prices have dropped by 50 percent.

“Sugar cane prices per tonne have dropped from over Shs 200,000 to Shs 100,000 and maize price have dropped from over Shs 1000 to Shs 500 a kilo,” explained Byaruhanga while presenting the memorandums from different districts.
