KABAROLE – Emyooga SACCO groups in Lango and Acholi sub-regions will soon be trained by the Microfinance Support Centre [MSC] in order to improve their performance.
According to Joseph Tukamushaba, head of Emyooga Secretariat at MSC, more Emyooga SACCOs and groups in Lango and Acholi sub-regions stand to benefit from the additional seed capital of Shs 20 million each if they adhere to the guidelines governing the disbursement and recovery of loans from the members.
At the moment, only 2,897 Emyooga associations in Lango and Acholi sub-regions have received the additional seed capital while over 2,000 associations have not gotten the extra funds due to poor performance.
Tukamushaba said this during an exchange field visit organised by MSC where Emyooga SACCO leaders from Lango and Acholi sub-regions visited MSC Kabarole Zone to learn what their peers are doing to perform better.
Commenting on the need to train Emyooga SACCOs, Tukamushaba said: “We shall train them [SACCOs] and give them technical guidance and assistance and they will qualify for additional seed capital. There is no one who will be left behind.”
He urged Emyooga SACCO leaders in Lango and Acholi sub-regions to work together to identify problems affecting the performances of their SACCOs and members.
“Let us believe that our Emyooga SACCOs can be the best, let’s identify the problems affecting these SACCOs and coordinate with responsible officials so that we get solutions to the challenges,” he said.
There are 357 Emyooga SACCO groups in Lango Sub-region while Acholi Subregion has a total of 330 groups.
Joyce Winnie Alima, coordinator of Emyooga SACCOs in Lango Sub-region said over 30 percent of these SACCOs are not performing well in terms of borrowing, and loan recovery because leaders did not have adequate experience in running the SACCOs.
Alima outlined Persons with Disability SACCO, Lira Municipality Journalist SACCOs, the Verant SACCO, and Youth Emyooga SACCOs as one of those that are not performing well.
Meanwhile Emyooga SACCO leaders in Lango and Acholi sub-regions are excited about the training to be offered by MSC, saying it will improve their performance.
Ben Byamukama, the supervisory committee chairperson of Carpenters Emyooga SACCO in Lira City said there is a need to form a formidable force of leaders who can effectively run the business.
Byamukama added they would mobilise Emyooga group members so that the training can be effective.
Richard Onyegiu, a loan officer of Aruu North Veteran Emyooga SACCO in Padre district urged all Emyooga SACCOs in Lango and Acholi sub-regions to ready themselves for the training if they are not to be left behind.
“This is a chance for our various groups to improve since we have been left behind,” Onyegiu said.
Grace Alaro, the secretary of Moroto Entrepreneur Emyooga SACCO said the training on the guidelines of Emyooga Programme will uplift the weak SACCOs in Alebtong district.
The Emyooga Programme, a presidential initiative on wealth and job creation was launched in August 2019 as part of the broad government strategy targeting to transform 68 percent of homesteads from subsistence to market-oriented production.
The initiative meant to improve household incomes is centered on various 18 enterprises covering majority of the hitherto, financially excluded Ugandans engaged in similar specialised enterprise categories such as salonists, welders, taxi drivers, boda boda riders, masons, journalists, and carpenters among other several others.
