MP Olobo wants PDM forms translated into local languages
AMOLATAR – Kioga North County Member of Parliament, James Olobo Dubai has urged the government to translate the Parish Development Model [PDM] forms into local languages, saying most of the beneficiaries don’t understand the English language.
MP Olobo said most Ugandans understand their mother language and would better understand the content in the PDM documents if they were written in local languages.
The legislator made the call on Tuesday while addressing journalists at Amolatar Town Council. “We want people to understand better the terms and conditions of borrowing this PDM money,” Olobo said.
The programme launched in February 2022, aims at transforming 3.5mln households in Uganda from a subsistence economy to money economy with government prepared to spend about Shs 1 trillion every financial year, beginning with the current one, as it targets about 10, 594 parishes.
According to government, each parish should receive Shs 100 million each financial year, even though President Museveni hinted recently that the money for the parishes could be increased further if the programme works well in its initial stages.
Meanwhile, Olobo said the process of accessing the PDM money is too long for a common person who is used to getting quick services from the village saving and loan associations [VSLAs].
“You know a number of the government programmes has been coming but very few lives have changed as a result of these programmes,” Olobo said.
The district LC5 chairperson of Amolatar, Geoffrey Ocen recently concurred with Olobo on translating the PDM forms into local languages.
Some of the PDM beneficiaries interviewed supported the idea of forms being translated into local languages, saying it would help them not to make mistakes.
