SIRONKO – Budadiri West Member of Parliament, Nathan Nandala Mafabi has commenced the distribution of seeds to farmers in his constituency as the new planting season goes on in Sironko district.
According to Nandala, he bought the seeds to help the farmers in his constituency to plant on time and hence minimise losses associated with late planting.
Rev. Jackson Magombe, the director in charge of operations, mobilisation and communications in the Office of MP Budadiri West, said the team has been mobilising and preparing farmers in the constituency for the new planting season.
Magombe told this reporter that some of the farmers in Budadiri West and other parts of Sironko district had not planted due to lack of seeds.
He explained that the office of MP Budadiri West has been giving seeds, hand hoes, fertiliser, and other farm tools to farmers each season.
According to Magombe, 2,500 kilogrammes of maize seeds will benefit 500 farmers from the 21 lower administrative units.
Thomas Kimasi, a farmer from Sironko Town, said some had failed to have seeds for planting in the new season due to hard economic conditions.
Rizik Nafuna, another farmer from Bukiyi Sub-county, said she will use the seeds received to replace the ones destroyed in the garden by drought and worms.
She said majority farmers who rushed to plant were affected by the delay of the rains.
Early this year, 150 farmers were identified and given land to plant crops like rice, cassava, beans, and tomatoes.
