MP Auma urges mothers to embrace saving culture

KWANIA, September 1, 2024 – Kenny Auma Lapat, the Kwania district Woman Member of Parliament, has encouraged beneficiaries of her skilling initiative to adopt a saving culture to enhance their livelihoods.

Auma made these remarks during a ceremony at Aduku PAG Town Church in Aduku Town Council where 300 teenage mothers graduated after completing a six-month vocational training programme funded by her office.

“I urge you to prioritise a saving culture, investment, insurance, and budgeting to navigate future financial challenges,” Auma said. “While you should always remember your roots, personal financial management must become a part of your daily life.”

Vincent Ogwal, the Aduku Subcounty LCIII Chairman, advised the beneficiaries to carefully evaluate the terms and conditions before taking out loans or becoming guarantors for others.

“Having received training, resist the temptation to seek loans for starting businesses or to act as guarantors,” Ogwal cautioned. “Instead, focus on becoming self-reliant and responsible citizens.”

Many of the graduates praised MP Auma for restoring hope in their lives. Dorcus Lillian Akello from Nambieso Subcounty shared how the initiative transformed her situation. “I became pregnant during the lockdown at just 14, and the man responsible abandoned me. As an orphan, I was left stranded until MP Kenny came to my aid. Now, I can feed my child and care for myself,” she said.

Linda Acio, another beneficiary from Alira Parish in Aduku Subcounty, expressed her intention to open a workshop and train other teenage mothers, passing on the knowledge she gained from the program.

Joyce Oroma, Aduku Subcounty Chief, urged the graduates to use their new skills to enhance their economic status and combat poverty.

As the Chief Guest, Geoffrey Alex Ogwal Adyebo, Kwania District LCV Chairman, encouraged the graduates to manage their finances wisely as they embark on new business ventures.

“Effective personal finance management involves budgeting, planning, tracking, and analysing costs to control income and expenses,” he explained. “We must focus on saving and carefully choose investments, ensuring we protect our businesses.”
