MP Auma donates Shs 40mln to gospel artists’ SACCO, women VSLAs
KWANIA – Kwania district Woman Member of Parliament, Kenny Auma Lapat has donated Shs 10 million to God is Good Gospel Singers’ Savings and Credit Cooperatives Society [SACCO].
The money was delivered on Friday during the official launch of the SACCO at Aduku Mayor’s Garden in Aduku town council, Kwania district.
Auma’s donation to God is Good Gospel Singers’ SACCO came shortly after donating Shs 30mln to support 12 Village Savings and Loan Associations [VSLAs] in Punoatar ward in Ayabi town council, Kwania district. Each group received Shs 2.5mln to boost their savings.
She implored the beneficiaries to embrace the saving culture and put the money into good use.
“There is no way you can develop your group when you don’t save money regularly. Yes, as your Members of Parliament we shall keep on supporting you but the truth is your group can not rely on donations. I want to request you to save money from time to time and utilise this little support well, with that we can develop together,” she said.
Artists warned against reckless lifestyles
MP Auma cautioned the gospel singers in Lango Sub-region against living reckless lifestyles as they join the field of God’s work.
She added: “Many artists after joining the music industry get excited because of popularity and end up engaging in alcoholism and dangerous sexual behaviors that put their lives at risk. It is my humble appeal that you walk the talk as you join God’s work.”
Betty Inomo, the chairperson God is Good Gospel Singers’ SACCO in a brief interview with this reporter on Friday thanked Auma for extending her financial support to their SACCO. “The money we have received from the MP will boost our savings and members will be borrowing informs of loan and later pay back at 10 percent interest rate,” she said.
She added: “As gospel artists in Lango we are facing lack of financial support and I want to appeal for more support from politicians, donors and even the well wishers to help us develop this SACCO.”
Nelson Ogwal, the SACCO general secretary said that plans are underway to purchase land and put up an office for the SACCO, purchase taxi for the SACCO, open up a recording studio among other key priorities in their work plan which aims to develop the SACCO to greater heights.
Caroline Okwang known by her stage name Toto-otino also popular by her hit gospel song Iti-momot who was the main singer at the launch urged the upcoming gospel artists to diversify to other alternative livelihood sources to improve on their economic status.
“For one to shine as a powerful gospel artist, one requires money besides the talent. You need to go to a good recording studio and have a good producer. To make the matter worse, many people do not support gospel artists, they instead prefer worldly songs. I want to advise you to diversify to other alternative sources. If you are able to do farming please do it, “she said.
God is Good Gospel Singers’ SACCO that comprises gospel artists from Apac and Kwania districts was established in 2015 with 24 members from the greater Apac. The SACCO located in Aduku town council has grown to 152 members and has a loan portfolio of Shs 120mln.
