KWANIA, September 25, 2024 — Kenny Auma Lapat, Kwania District Woman Member of Parliament [MP] has donated Shs 2.7 million to Women Village Savings and Loan Associations [VSLAs] in Nambieso Subcounty.

Each of the nine groups, all from Ojokdot Parish received Shs 300,000 seed capital to support their income-generating initiatives aimed at fighting poverty.

The beneficiary groups include, Bed ilwak Village Saving Group, Ket Can ikweri from Ayat B Village, Badi en papi from Abulubulu Village, Orib Cing Women’s Group from Oriye A, Bed igen Women’s Group from Oriye B Village, Ayat Farmers’ Group from Ayat A Village, Alengere Women Widows’ Group from Alengere Village, Ongwalo Onote Women Group from Ayat Trading Centre and Obanga Ber Development Group from Oriye Village.

While handing over the money to the beneficiaries days ago at Ayat Primary School, MP Auma urged them to utilise the funds effectively.

“As a Woman Member of Parliament for Kwania district, I want to take women out of poverty. Women should rise and help their husbands in productive activities to develop their families. The money I am giving you today should be properly utilised,” she said.

Harriet Abalo, an aspirant vying for Kwania County MP seat in the 2026 parliamentary elections, also contributed Shs 200, 000 to support the women’s groups, urging them to invest in projects that will improve their lives. “Money should not be kept in the house. However little it is, I encourage you to put this money into projects like piggery, and goat rearing among others to improve your household incomes,” she said.

Beneficiaries speak out

Semmy Adoko, a member of Alengere Women Widows’ Village Saving Group welcomed the donation with excitement, pledging to invest the money in goat rearing. “The money given to us today will boost our current savings of Shs 3.6mln. I want to thank so much MP Auma for the generous support. We will put the money in goat rearing project to grow our savings,” she said.

Another beneficiary Collins Ogai of Orib Cing Women Village Saving Group is hopeful that the money given to them will change their lives when properly utilised. “The money given to us will be borrowed and paid back at an interest rate of 10 percent. This will help us pay school fees and I thank MP Kenny for the financial aid,” she said during an interview with this reporter on Monday.

Auma’s support to the nine village saving groups comes a few months after the legislator extended financial support to 10 VSLAs in Acwao parish Nambieso Subcounty, Atongtidi Subcounty, and Aduku Town Council in a move geared towards empowering women economically.

VSLAs are community-based initiatives that provide a safe space for members to save money and access loans. They are an effective way to promote financial inclusion and resilience, especially in rural communities.
