GULU– The Gulu City Woman of Parliament, Betty Aol Ocan has distributed at least 2,500 Kilogrammes [kgs] of maize seeds to at least 32 widow groups within the city.
Groups that have so far received the seeds include Paminanoo 60kgs, Oitino 80kgs, Kweyo 100kgs, Acoyo 100kgs, Alokoloum 90kgs. Others are Laliya elders 80kgs and Catechists of Lukome Parish receiving 100kgs.
Solomon Rachkara, an agronomist and political assistant in the Office of the City Woman MP said they distributed to the widows Longe 5 variety which gives good yields.
“It is proven that the Longe 5 maize variety has very good yielding capacities and also pest resistant, meaning the beneficiaries don’t have to spend on pesticides,” Rachkara said.
According to MP Aol Ochan, the donation of the maize seeds is part of the social corporate responsibility of her office to support food security and boost livelihoods among the communities in her constituency.
Aol advised the beneficiaries to take advantage of the current rains being experienced to plant the seeds and realize good harvests.
Evelyn Obote, a widow from Kweyo Ward in Bar dege Layibi Division, Gulu City appreciated the legislator, saying most times widows are neglected when such support is given to community members deemed vulnerable.
Obote said that most of the group members in Kweyo Ward were already struggling to buy treated maize seeds because they are expensive.
“With the poor harvests of last year, people are poverty-stricken and hungry, and many are unable to even buy just a kilo of maize which costs between Shs 2,000 to Shs 3,000,” Obota said.
