MP Akol urges Acholi locals to embrace livestock farming instead of selling land

The legislator urged the locals in Acholi to emulate their neighbours in Lango Subregion who he said have taken up livestock, and poultry rearing

AMURU, August 19, 2024 – Anthony Akol, the Member of Parliament for Kilak North in Amuru district has urged locals in Acholi Subregion to embrace livestock farming when the fourth phase of the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund [NUSAF IV] kicks off.

Akol who was days ago speaking on Mega FM, a local radio in Gulu City said that failure to invest in livestock and poultry keeping is the reason locals sell their land when they need quick money to solve a problem.

“Livestock such as goats, cattle and poultry can be easily sold off to solve a family emergency but because people don’t have these assets, they are forced to sell off their land quickly,” said Akol.

The legislator urged the locals in Acholi to emulate their neighbours in Lango Subregion who he said have taken up livestock, and poultry rearing.

“When you pass through Lango, for example, at Kamdini, you will find people selling a lot of chicken but you will not find this in Acholi,” he explained, adding that local chicken are easy to rear as they can feed on their own.

He also asked locals to embrace growing of high value crops like coffee and cashew nuts instead of soybeans which is a common commercial crop among local farmers.

NUSAF IV, valued at US $290 million, was, according to Parliament of Uganda to have kicked off in July 2023 but has since been delayed.

NUSAF 1V is a government initiative funded with loans from the World Bank aimed at supporting social protection and development in Acholi and Karamoja Subregions.

The two subregions were recently ranked as the poorest in Uganda, with Karamoja leading with 68 percent, followed by Acholi at 64 percent in terms of the people living in poverty.

NUSAF IV builds on the successes of its predecessors, NUSAF I through NUSAF III and seeks to expand its scope and beneficiaries.

The project is set to support 4,064 parishes, 667,000 households and 31mln beneficiaries and create 21,000 self-employment enterprises for youth beneficiaries.
