Mothers should be supported to be self-reliant, says Masindi district boss

MASINDI, May 12, 2024 – Cosmas Byaruhanga, the Masindi district LCV chairperson, has urged government and other stakeholders in the country to continue supporting Ugandan mothers and girls so that they can be self-reliant.

“A mother should be able to own property, make money, and engage in different economic programmes to be able to care for their children. The girl child should also be supported to attain education as one way of empowering her,” said Byaruhanga.

He also urged men not to neglect their family responsibilities. Empowering women economically doesn’t mean that the men should relax on their responsibilities,” said Byaruhanga during the celebrations of Mothers’ Day which were organised by Safe Path Mothers’ Foundation at Masindi hospital on Sunday.

Mothers’ Day is a celebration honouring mothers as well as motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated in May on various days in many parts of the world.

This year’s celebrations were held under the Theme: Celebrating motherhood a timeless bond. The theme highlights the timeless nature of the bond between mothers and their children emphasising the enduring love and support that mothers provide to their children during their lifetime.

Presiding over the function, Julius Mugisa, Director Lady Doves Football Club and Dove Football Club described mothers as key people in the society since they facilitate recreation and play a big role in modeling the children to become responsible citizens.

“I call upon the mothers to always ensure that you value your lives such that you are able to produce healthy babies. Also make sure that you produce manageable children whom you can give time, take care of and educate,” he said.

Speaking during the same function, Sherifa Nabule, Chief Executive Officer Safe Path Mothers’ Foundation said they started the organization with the aim of supporting mothers, reduce causes of maternal death, reduce stigma, encourage mothers to deliver in health facilities among others.

“We shall also be providing necessities like mama kits among others. We are doing all this due to the sacrifices and the value the mothers offer. I became a mother at 19 years. I know what mothers go through. We don’t want to see mothers dying due to lack of necessities and ignorance,” said Nabule.

The attendees were also taken through aerobics, reproductive health trainings and HIV testing. They people also donated blood.
