Minister tasks MPs to mobilise people to get out of poverty

WEST NILE – After very many interventions by government to eradicate poverty across the country failed, the Finance Minister Matia Kasaija has tasked MPs to mobilise Ugandans for the Parish Development Model [PDM] to get out of poverty in their constituencies.

He said, if MPs mobilized the communities for the Parish Development Model [PDM] that government has just introduced, the populations would get out of poverty and their livelihoods would change.

“The Parish Development Model will liberate people from poverty and people will get more money and increase their household demands,” Matia said.

He further said, West Nile region and the entire DR-Congo  will be   blessed to see  the industrial park that government intends to construct.

At the launch of PDM, the president identified four sectors for wealth and job creation that the PDM will advance and benefit the entire population as Commercial Agriculture, Industry, Services and Information, Communication technology [ICT].

Matia added that the PDM is a multi-sectoral strategy designed by the government to create socio-economic transformation targeting the 39 percent households in subsistence economy, to move them into the money economy using the Parish as a hub for tapping development which benefit the local communities.

“Government has employed a workable approach to ensure increased production, processing and marketing, infrastructure and service delivery at grass roots for economic transformation,” Matia said.

According to the Minister for privatization, finance and economic investment Ms Evelyn Anite, Nebbi industrial park falls under the model design of  seven pillars which include Production, Storage, Processing and Marketing; Infrastructure and Economic Services, Financial Inclusion, Social Services, Mindset change, Parish- Based Management Information System,  Governance and Administration where people should get ready to use the available resources within their reach.

“Since Parish Development Model is around us, we have to encourage our local investors in the West Nile region to utilize the industrial park for the domestic investment and market,” Anite said.

The State Minister for Northern Uganda Ms Grace Kwiocwiny Freedom urged Northerners to embrace the available parish development model as an opportunity to supply the factories that will be constructed with raw materials.

She adds that all the negativity that was said about the West Nile region lagging behind in the country due to extreme poverty must be history by engaging in Agro-processing factories.

She says, many factories in the region have left because of inadequate raw materials from the farmers, so the Parish Development Model will soon answer all the questions of inadequate raw materials since farmers’ capacities to supply factories will be boosted.

“Don’t allow poverty to romance you again, the government is fighting poverty so let’s show commitments to supply factories by engaging in agriculture for economic change,” Kwiocwiny said.
