KUMI, November 1, 2023 – The Minister of State for Microfinance, Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune, has asked people in Kumi district to embrace government programmes aimed at improving household incomes and livelihoods.
“All programmes that the government is coming up with are aimed at improving the individual household incomes so that consequently their livelihoods are made better,” Kasolo said.
He called upon the locals to take advantage of Emyooga and the Parish Development Model [PDM], saying they are government programmes aimed at fighting household poverty and creating jobs.
The minister made the remarks days ago while monitoring the implementation of government programmes in Kumi district.
He also advised residents to promote peace, saying it is important for the development of the country.
On his part, the Kumi District Resident Commissioner, Ahmed Washaki appealed to women in the district to embrace government’s development programmes if they are to eradicate poverty out of their homes.
He stressed that the National Resistance Movement [NRAM] government has always put women at the forefront when it comes to development programmes in sectors like education and health, among others.
Washaki added that, “Women should use the existing peace to embrace and engage in the available government programmes to kick poverty out of their homes. Specialised programmes like Uganda Women’s Entrepreneurship Programme [UWEP], Youth Livelihood Programme, Emyooga and the PDM l are all aimed at improving communities. Women should therefore take the lead and also empower their children by taking them to school so that they can have a bright future.”
Hellen Akello, a teacher in Kumi district noted that most rural women don’t have adequate information about the various government programmes, thus hindering them from participating in the programmes.
