Minister Amongi asks women to embrace PDM

OYAM – The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development [MGLSD], Betty Amongi has urged women council leaders in Oyam district to embrace the Parish Development Model [PDM] as a driver that can improve household incomes.

Amongi said under the programme, the government has allocated 30 percent for women, 30 percent for the youth, 10 percent for disabled persons, and 10 percent for the elderly, while the general community takes 20 percent of the funds sent to the PDM SACCOs.

She urged the women to use the PDM money for economic empowerment by engaging in commercial production of poultry, grains, cereals, dairy, and others.

The PDM was launched in February 2022, with the aim to move 3.5 million households from the subsistence economy to the money economy in five years, starting with the financial year 2022/ 2023.

Government is committed to disbursing over Shs 1 trillion annually to 10,594 parishes in Uganda, with each parish getting Shs 100mln revolving fund from which enterprise groups can borrow to engage in income-generating activities.

Minister Amongi was addressing women council leaders and councillors at Northern Gate Way Hotel and Loung at Kamdini town council in Oyam district on Thursday during a training organised by Uganda Women Council on entrepreneurship.

According to the deputy executive secretary of Uganda Women Council, Emily Akullo Omacara, the training focused on entrepreneurship, financial literacy, enterprise selection, and value addition, which she said would help women prosper.

Amongi said women play a vital role in economic development, improving family welfare and support men in whatever they do but they should not be lagged behind in the development.

“In Uganda we have 10,594 parishes and I want to ask you to be active and participate in all the PDM programmes and other government programmes to be economically sound and be self-reliant,” she added.

According to Oyam district LC5 chairman, Benson Dila Oyuku, they have so far registered 74 PDM SACCOs and are waiting for the official launch of the disbursement of the funds to the beneficiaries.

According to the national budget document for the next financial year, government has allocated over Shs 1 trillion to the PDM SACCOs out of the Shs 52trn it plans to spend.
