Mboira Seed Secondary School receives facilities worth Shs 466mln

KIRYANDONGO, August 30, 2025 – Mboira Seed Secondary School, located in Mboira Sub-county, Kiryandongo district, has received five new classrooms, a five-stance latrine, and 100 desks, in a bid to boost student enrolment and retention.

According to the school’s headteacher, Richard Katwesige, the new facilities, valued at Shs 466 million, will significantly support the school’s efforts to retain learners and improve the learning environment.

Previously, Mboira Seed Secondary School had one of the highest dropout rates in the district, largely due to inadequate infrastructure to accommodate learners.

The newly constructed classrooms are expected to attract more students from within the sub-county and neighbouring Masindi district. The school currently has an enrolment of 453 students.

Katwesige expressed gratitude to the Kiryandongo district leadership for prioritising infrastructure development at the school, saying the investment had given the institution a much-needed facelift.

He further appealed to the district to consider providing additional facilities such as an ICT laboratory, a science laboratory, and a library, which he said would help the school become more competitive both locally and nationally.

Johnson Katusabe, the District Inspector of Schools, noted a marked improvement in the enrolment of girls in Mboira Sub-county, attributing this to sustained community mobilisation efforts through dialogue initiatives spearheaded by the district.

Anselm Kyaligonza, the Chief Administrative Officer of Kiryandongo, commended parents for their active participation in school activities, saying such engagement enables communities to better appreciate the government’s interventions.

“My first visit to Mboira Seed Secondary School motivated me to lobby for infrastructure funding to improve its image. Now that the facilities have been established, we hope they will translate into improved academic performance, as the learning environment has greatly improved,” Kyaligonza said.

He also urged parents to support the school feeding programme to ensure learners have lunch and remain focused during lessons.

David Mugenyi Ssemuddu, the Secretary for Finance, reminded parents that the government remains committed to improving livelihoods through initiatives such as Emyooga Programme and the Parish Development Model [PDM]. He encouraged them to play their role by supporting their children’s education.

Jonathan Akweteireho, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner, urged students to remain in school and work hard to achieve success in life.

He also cautioned parents against neglecting their responsibility to educate their children, warning that failing to send children to school poses a security risk to both the community and the nation.

Mboira Sub-county, where the school is located, continues to grapple with high rates of teenage pregnancy and low primary school completion among girls.

However, with ongoing community engagement and improved school infrastructure, positive changes are emerging, as reflected in the increasing number of girls enrolled at Mboira Seed Secondary School.
