Bishop Olwa roots for cotton growing in Lango

LIRA-The Bishop of Lango Diocese, Rev. Prof. Alfred Olwa has directed all the archdeaconries in the sub-region to embark on cotton growing, saying the initiative will help the institution to earn an income from the sale of the yields.

According to Olwa, each archdeaconry and vicarage is expected to produce 20 tonnes of cotton, which will be sold to generate money to fund rehabilitation and infrastructural development in the Church of Uganda-founded schools.

Lango diocese has about 15 archdeaconries and vicarages.

It also has over 20 primary and secondary schools and a tertiary institution and according to Olwa, Lango Diocese cannot wait for the funding from government to improve the schools’ infrastructure, saying government has many obligations including paying teachers’ salaries.

Speaking at the burial of Jasper Okello, the elder brother to Government Chief Whip, Denis Hamson Obua at Amindit village in Alebtong district recently, Olwa said the diocese has signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the company that will buy its cotton.

“We shall not sell to small-scale dealers but a large-scale company,” he said.

Cotton production in northern Uganda especially in Lango and Acholi has been declining due to several factors, which include unstable prices, pests, diseases, poor yields, lack of inputs, and land fragmentation.

According to Cotton Development Organisation, farmers in Uganda are still willing and interested in growing cotton.

Bishop Olwa said land for cotton growing is available in every archdeaconry in the diocese and that seeds for planting would be provided as early as January.

He said the money earned from cotton sales would also be used to add three classroom blocks in each of the selected schools linked to the diocese.
