Masindi hospital gets US$ 96,000 water and maternal health boost

MASINDI, 21 March 2026 – Masindi Hospital has received a major upgrade, thanks to a joint initiative by the Rotary Club of Masindi and the Bweyogerere Rotary Club, which delivered a US$ 64,000 water project alongside US$ 32,000 worth of maternal healthcare equipment.

Brenda Mugisa, President of the Rotary Club of Masindi, unveiled the new Water, Sanitation and Hygiene [WASH] project on Tuesday. The solar-powered well system aims to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply throughout the hospital, addressing longstanding sanitation and hygiene challenges.

The project includes the installation of six 10,000-litre reservoir tanks and extensive plumbing across the hospital and operating theatre. Mugisa highlighted the wider benefits: “This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the hospital’s water and electricity bills. We are also providing reusable sanitary pads and training mothers on how to make them.”

At the same event, the Bweyogerere Rotary Club contributed essential maternal equipment to improve maternal and child healthcare. Valued at US$ 32,000, the donation includes an operating bed, caesarean section instruments, 15 beds with mattresses, three delivery beds, surgical lights, and sterilisers.

Peace Flavia Lukabya, President of the Rotary Club Bweyogerere, emphasised their commitment to safe deliveries and healthier outcomes for newborns.

Dr. Rogers Musinguzi, Public Health Specialist at Masindi Hospital, praised the initiative, noting the critical role of water in effective healthcare delivery and improved sanitation.

He added that the new maternal equipment would greatly support hospital staff, who currently handle around 420 deliveries each month.

The project was officially launched by Geoffrey Kitakule Martin, District Governor of the Rotary Club.

He explained that the initiative addresses the hospital’s outdated water infrastructure, including a century-old, undersized tank.

Kitakule stressed that the partnership with Masindi District Local Government aims to provide a lasting, safe, infection-free environment for healthcare workers and patients.

He also acknowledged support from Centenary Bank and urged hospital management to ensure proper use and maintenance of the equipment, which comes with a one-year guarantee.
