Masindi DRDC applauds Boda Boda Emyooga SACCO for strong performance

MASINDI,  July 24, 2025 — The Deputy Resident District Commissioner [DRDC] of Masindi, Dhaala Sanon, has praised the Buruli Constituency Boda Boda Emyooga SACCO for its impressive performance, particularly its strong saving culture over the past four years.

On 23 July 2025, DRDC Dhaala officially handed over three brand-new Bajaj motorcycles worth Shs18 million to the SACCO. These were purchased using an additional Shs 20 million grant from the Microfinance Support Centre [MSC], the government agency responsible for managing Emyooga programme funds.

The SACCO received the extra funding in recognition of its commendable performance, transparency, and financial accountability.

“I want to commend the Buruli Constituency Boda Boda Emyooga SACCO for cultivating a culture of saving, which has earned them an additional grant of Shs 20 million from MSC. These funds have been invested in a joint boda boda project,” said Dhaala, addressing the boda boda riders gathered at Masindi Municipal Stadium.

Moses Kalyegira, Principal Commercial Officer for Masindi District, explained that one motorcycle had been allocated to the Isimba Boda Boda Emyooga Association, another to the Kibangya Boda Boda Emyooga Association, while the third would be retained for SACCO operations.

He urged the beneficiaries to ensure proper use of the motorcycles so that more members could benefit from the revolving fund in future.

Buruli Constituency Member of Parliament, Aled Ronald Akugizibwe, also called on the associations to repay the funds in a timely manner to allow other groups to access similar support.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Jonan Wobusobozi, Chairperson of the Masindi Motorcycle Operators Association [MAMOA], thanked the government for supporting young people through initiatives like Emyooga. He encouraged members to strengthen their saving habits to unlock further opportunities.

“With the Emyooga programme, we now have the chance to thrive. Previously, we were burdened by high-interest loans from motorcycle financing companies. With this support, we can now purchase our own motorcycles at affordable prices. Our association, which represents nearly 3,000 riders, appeals to the government for more financial support, so we can eventually import our own motorcycles,” Wobusobozi stated.

Emyooga is a Presidential Initiative on Wealth and Job Creation launched in August 2019. In the Bunyoro Sub-region, it was formally introduced in July last year by the State Minister for Microfinance, Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, during an event in Masindi district.

The programme targets 19 enterprise clusters, including boda boda riders, salon owners, carpenters, taxi operators, welders, market vendors, journalists, performing artists, and mechanics, among others. Apart from political leaders’ enterprise groups which get Shs 50 million, enterprise groups, with a minimum of 30 members each, are eligible to receive up to Shs 30 million each, in funding, accessible as a revolving fund with an annual interest rate of 5 percent.

Masindi district received Shs 1.6 billion in seed capital under the Emyooga initiative, which was disbursed to 54 SACCOs across the district.
