Masaka: Nabbanja warns govt officials, politicians not to frustrate PDM
MASAKA -The Prime Minister of Uganda, Robinah Nabbanja has warned government officials and politicians in Buganda region against frustrating the implementation of the Parish Development Model [PDM].
Speaking over the weekend during the fundraising at Kkindu Catholic Parish in Kyanamukaka Sub-county in Masaka, Nabbanja said government is determined to move 39 percent of Ugandan households still in the subsistence economy into the money economy.
She said that greedy and corrupt local government officers frustrating government programmes like the PDM would be dealt with.
”I will not accept such corrupt tendencies of frustrating government development projects like PDM. I am committed to fighting the corrupt people and ensuring that the rural poor people benefit from government development projects,” she said.
The Prime Minister said some parish chiefs and town agents in Buganda region had not mobilised the eligible low income households to benefit from the PDM because of their selfish interests. ”They have not helped the poor households select suitable enterprises that would help to end poverty in those communities,” she warned.
Nabbanja urged groups to elect trustworthy leaders to PDM SACCOs so that there can be transparency in the operation of the SACCOs.
She urged politicians in Buganda region to leave behind their political differences and affiliations, saying they should instead monitor government projects for the benefit of the poor communities.
Mudashiru Bbaale, the chairperson for persons with disabilities in Kyesiiga Sub-county told the prime minister that parish chiefs recruited their friends into the PDM SACCO, leaving out the poor households that PDM targets.
The Minister of State for Minister for Microfinance, Haruna Kasolo noted that government has established initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty in all parts of the country.
Masaka district commercial officer, John Henry Wasswa Ssempijja said PDM SACCOs have been established and at least 460 enterprise groups mobilised.
He cited poultry, banana, maize, dairy farming, rabbit rearing, and passion fruits, coffee, and piggery as some of the enterprises that groups have chosen to implement.
