Don’t misuse PDM money, Bishop Olwa urges beneficiaries
ALEBTONG, November 2, 2023 – The Bishop of Lango Diocese, Prof Alfred Olwa has advised the beneficiaries of the Parish Development Model [PDM] in Alebtong district not to spend the money received on drinking alcohol and or marrying more wives but rather invest it in income generating activities since it is supposed to be paid back.
“The money is meant for transforming your life and taking you out of poverty but not for drinking or adding more women,” Olwa said in Abako Sub-county recently during thanksgiving prayers for Apami Primary School which got renovated.
He added: “The target is to increase household incomes and improve quality of life.”
President Yoweri Museveni launched PDM in 2022 with the aim to move 3.5 million from the subsistence economy to the money economy.
Under the programme each of the 10,594 parishes in the country gets Shs 100mln every financial year as the Parish Revolving Fund [PRF] from which beneficiaries borrow.
The programme to run for five years, has a number of commodities such as coffee growing, piggery, poultry keeping, cotton, cassava, maize, tea, vegetable oil palm, rice, sugar cane, fish farming among others.
Olwa told the the programme’s beneficiaries that the money they are receiving is not free money from government and must work hard to benefit from it and refund it to the PRF.
“The money will remain in the parish and will not opportunity or any chance to go back to government, so use it properly to improve your livelihood,” he said.
The Government Chief Whip, Denis Hamson Obua who doubles as Ajuri County Member of Parliament said soon he will embark on the monitoring tour to establish how the PDM beneficiaries in Alebtong district are utilising the money received.
He said the district had so far received Shs 6.9 billion targeting to benefit 1,122 enterprise groups both in Moroto and Ajuri counties.
“People are just hearing from other areas that the arrest is being made in other places but ours also will start soon because we don’t want people to abuse the money,” Obua said.
