NAMISINDWA, November 13, 2023 – A major bridge in Namisindwa district has developed cracks following heavy rains that have been pounding Bugisu Sub-region.
The Nakhaya bridge in Buwatuwa Sub-county in Namisindwa is vital to the movement of people and their goods, especially agricultural produce.
Currently, Namisindwa district is facing a major problem with the deteriorating condition of several bridges, including Nakhaya bridge that has been in a bad condition for about two years.
The bridge was built over a decade ago and was designed to withstand the weight of heavy vehicles that move between Kenya and Uganda, Namisindwa being a border district.
According to Wilson Walimbwa, the Buwatuwa Sub-county councillor LCV, due to lack of maintenance and repair work, the bridge had started to show signs of wear and tear.
He noted that the concrete pillars that support the bridge have developed cracks, and the metal beams that hold the bridge together have also rusted.
Walimbwa said the bridge needs urgent attention to aid the movement of people and their merchandise.
Mwelu Abneli, the Buwabwala parish councillor in Buwatuwa Sub-county said as local leaders, they have been raising concerns about the bridge’s condition for a long time but in vain.
He noted that the district authorities neglected the bridge despite being weak, leaving the locals in a precarious situation.
He said that many people use the bridge everyday to commute to work, school, markets and other places but now they are finding it difficult to reach their destinations.
Bwayo Emma, the Namisindwa district male youth councillor, applauded local leaders for raising awareness of the weakened bridge.
Davis Walyaula, the chairperson of works and technical services committee for Namisindwa district said there is apparently no money to fix bridges in the district.
