Loro Town Council VSLA Groups Receive Grant of Shs 3mln

OYAM, April 7, 2025 — At least 10 Village Savings and Loan Associations [VSLAs ] women’s groups in Loro Town Council, Oyam District, have been awarded three million shillings to increase their capital base.

The grant was presented to the groups by Santa Alum Ogwang, the Woman Member of Parliament for Oyam District, during a belated International Women’s Day celebration held at Loro Health Centre III.

Each of the groups received Shs 300,000. The groups include Wek Obanga Tii VSLA Women’s Group, Gene-young VSLA Group, Obanga Omarowaa VSLA Women’s Group, Rwot Akica VSLA Women’s Group, Acankwia Goro VSLA Women’s Group, Obango Akica VSLA Women’s Group, Bed-igen VSLA Women’s Group, Aboloneno Youth Development Group, among others.

MP Alum encouraged the women and youth of Oyam District to work hard to achieve their development goals, adding that the small grant could make a significant difference in their lives if used wisely.

She continued, “This small amount of money I have given to these women, who have formed VSLA groups, can support them in engaging in income-generating activities.” Alum also urged the women to continue working in groups, as this is the only way the government can extend financial support to them.

The women in the various groups expressed their excitement at the MP’s financial contribution.

Collin Among, the Chairperson of Rwot Akica VSLA Women’s Group in Miciri Cell, said the grant would boost their capital base, from which members can borrow funds to support their activities.

“We save money and lend it to our members. We will deposit this grant into our group account and continue lending it to our members so they can develop their businesses and homes,” Among said.

Silver Angweng, the Chairperson of Adagani Women’s Group in Abero Village, Loro Town Council, thanked MP Alum for her support, adding that the group members would use the money to improve their lives.

Angweng acknowledged the importance of the VSLA, saying it had helped her and other members meet basic needs such as school fees, clothing, mobile phone airtime, and medical expenses, among others.

“We save money and divide it amongst ourselves at the end of the year, but we also borrow from the savings to pay school fees for our children, cover medical expenses, and support farming. The VSLA has made life easier for us,” Angweng said.

Meanwhile, Simpo Akello, a member of the Adagani VSLA Women’s Group, said she would now borrow money from the group to buy seeds for planting this season.

“I will borrow some money to buy seeds because our savings have been boosted by MP Alum,” Akello said.

Joan Aceng, the Senior Community Development Officer for Loro Town Council, urged members of the various VSLA groups to use the funds for their intended purposes.
