Lira women’s cooperative train in liquid soap production

LIRA-Platform for Labour Action [PLA], a national civil society organisation in the country has trained Lira Main Market Women Vendors’ Cooperative in liquid soap production to enable them to generate extra income.

The cooperative, according to its chairperson, Margaret Otile also has had members trained in poultry keeping, piggery, rabbit, and beekeeping.

Otile said the knowledge gained in different enterprises will help members to generate more income to supplement their businesses.

‘Some of our members are doing piggery, rearing rabbits and poultry but the main purpose of training us was to impact additional kills to boost business,” said Otile who has a farm of 200 birds.

She said the cooperative gets some money through weekly savings and giving out loans to registered members, adding that they will use some of the money to process liquid soap.

“We have saved some money and right now we are planning to use it to buy materials for making liquid soap,” she said.

The chairperson of Lira Central Market Traders cooperative Society, Bazil Edwoko said the market has 15 small cooperatives that lack financial support.

He commended PLA for training, adding that they are in the process of forming a cooperative union.

He called upon development partners and financial institutions to provide market women with training on financial literacy.
