According to the university’s officials, the programmes will soon be availed so that teachers and head teachers can acquire higher qualifications to meet the current government policies in the education sector.

In 2019, the government designed the National Teacher Policy that requires all teachers at all levels to have a bachelor’s degree in education as a minimum qualification. The policy is aimed at professionalising and improving the quality of teaching.

The university’s senior communication officer, Patrick Opio said the admission board headed by Vice-chancellor Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng have resolved that the three programmes be introduced to cater for the high demand.

The development came in immediately after the University completed the construction of its Shs 7 billion Faculty of Education.

The three-storeyed complex has 21 offices, a boardroom, three mini boardrooms, ten lecture rooms, and one staffroom.

Other facilities in the faculty, library, a multipurpose hall and three e-classrooms [computer laboratories]. The three basic science laboratories [Physics, Chemistry and Biology] for training teachers are also contained in the building.

Prof. Ogwal also said a total of 90 primary and secondary school teachers have been admitted to pursue degrees referred to as Bachelor of External Studies.

“At the moment only students on external programmes were admitted as the rest of the programmes wait for general admission slated for September,” Ogwal said.

Students on external programme are those in-service teachers who study only during holidays when most of the learners in both secondary and primary schools are at home.

Opio said they have got overwhelming demand for the introduction of an external programme. ” Students who missed the opportunity for the first admission requested the authorities to re-open the admission,” he said.
