Lira hospital struggling to provide health services-official

LIRA-Lira Regional Referral Hospital is struggling with scarce resources and limited space to provide maternal health care, safe delivery, and neonatal care, according to a senior staff.

Dr. James Okello, the in-charge of the gynecology unit at the hospital said the facility has limited space, inadequate staff, and medical equipment among others.

Receiving an assortment of medical equipment from Stanbic Bank which includes mattresses, mama kits, phototherapy unit, and steriliser, Okello said about 500-600 deliveries are conducted monthly despite the limited space and heavy workload.

He said the Lango Sub-region is currently one of the leading regions in the country as far as the fertility rate is concerned.

For instance, he said the rate of teenage mothers in Kole and Oyam districts is higher than in any other district in the country.

“In the department, we have only 16 midwives and three specialists against 20-25 deliveries per day,” he added, adding, “Every day we have an average of eight mothers whose deliveries require theater. Preparing for theater operations is a big challenge.”

He also said the department has about 40 beds only, leaving many patients to sleep on the floor while others in a tent provided by Lira University.

Juliet Atoo, a board member of the hospital thanked Stanbic Bank for the donation and urged the staff to utilise the equipment well.

The Bank`s regional manager in charge of Northern Uganda, Bernard Ogwal said the donation was part of its wider corporate social responsibility that has seen the bank donate to the health facilities in the country as it marks 60 years of existence.

Ogwal said regional referral hospitals like Lira, Arua, Gulu, and Yumbe Health Centre IV have benefited from the support.

Damoni Kitabire, a board member of the Bank, said one of the most important reasons for investing in the health sector is to save people’s lives since they play an important role in the development of the country.
