Lira Emyooga SACCO appeals for heavy-duty sewing machine

LIRA CITY, April 17, 2025 – The Lira Municipality Tailors’ Emyooga SACCO in Lira City is appealing for support to acquire a heavy-duty sewing machine, citing inefficiencies with the regular machines currently in use.

Heavy-duty sewing machines are fitted with more powerful motors that can handle tough fabrics and multiple layers, making them ideal for materials such as denim, canvas, leather, and upholstery fabrics. In contrast, regular sewing machines are only suitable for lighter fabrics and basic tailoring tasks.

Keren Sharon Ekit, the SACCO Chairperson, said that while their tailoring business is progressing well and they continue to provide loans to members, the acquisition of a heavy-duty machine would significantly enhance productivity.

“We are grateful for the SACCO. Our operations are running smoothly, and we’re also able to lend money to members. As part of value addition, we are producing garments like clothes,” said Ekit. “However, we now seek financial support to invest in heavy-duty sewing, which will allow us to do more.”

Juliet Dorcus Ayoo, the SACCO Secretary, added that regular sewing machines not only limit productivity but also cause physical strain to users.

“These machines can be uncomfortable to use for long periods, often leading to back pain for seamstresses and tailors,” Ayoo explained. “Having a heavy-duty sewing machine will help members save time and allow them to take on additional income-generating activities.”

Simon Peter Egiarit, Zonal Manager of the Gulu Microfinance Support Centre, commended the SACCO for its hard work and progress, but acknowledged the need for better equipment.

“They are doing well—they’re producing quality suits and garments, and I admire their standards,” said Egiarit. “However, they still lack the appropriate machinery needed to make high-quality clothing efficiently.”

Egiarit revealed that the government plans to disburse Shs 20 million in additional seed capital to the SACCO as part of its annual support. He encouraged the members to invest this funding wisely, particularly in acquiring a common user facility, such as a heavy-duty sewing machine.

“The government is committed to giving them Shs 20 million every year. If they invest that in a shared facility like a high-powered sewing machine, it will provide great value and propel their business forward,” he advised.

Looking ahead, the SACCO also intends to establish a training centre where both young women and men can gain tailoring skills and be linked to employment opportunities.
