Lira – December 22, 2023 – The authorities of Lira City have promised to offer to land for the construction of a multipurpose production business centre to serve women in Lango Sub-region.
Lango Sub-region has 10 districts of Amolatar, Alebtong, Apac, Kwania, Oyam, Kole, Dokolo, Otuke, Lira, and Lira City and are all expected to benefit from the national project.
According to The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi who was speaking at the recent exhibition by women at the Mayor’s Garden in Lira City, women’s multipurpose production business centres will be constructed across the country.
The common user facilities will be constructed under the five-year Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises [GROW] project that focuses on increasing women’s access to entrepreneurial services so that they grow their enterprises.
Sam Atul, the Lira City Mayor while addressing businesswomen on Wednesday said they will ensure proper service delivery for the women.
Atul said Lira City Council would offer land for the construction of the business, saying it would help boost women’s businesses.
“The government has given us a task to provide a piece of land for the construction of the business centre. I want to promise to you that Lira City will do that,” said Atul.
Meanwhile, Alex Asiimwe, the Commissioner at the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Production advised that the land for the construction of the centre should be free of encumbrances so that the investment is protected.
Women entrepreneurs in Lira City expressed excitement, saying their businesses will now grow with the coming of the GROW project.
Stella Adero, who owns a shoe-making business, said that the quality of her products will be improved, and branded very well since the common user facility will be providing all the tools necessary.
According to Minister Amongi, the Shs 800 billion to build the multi-purpose production business centres has already been released by the World Bank and approved by the Parliament of Uganda, adding that the construction will depend on the availability of land in various cities and towns.
“The construction shall depend on how fast we are given land. We already have the money. It has already been approved by parliament for this financial year. The World Bank has already released it, all we need is, for people to first track their requisition for benefiting from the project, we have about 800 billion for the construction of the centres in all the sub-regions of the country,
The GROW project plans to deliver a multi-sectoral program that pairs finance [loans and grants] with business development services and productive infrastructure, including childcare, to support women in growing their businesses.
