KAMPALA, January 17, 2024 – The 12th Edition of World Cooperative Monitor [ WCM ] will be launched on January 16, 2024, with most of the invitees expected to follow the event on Zoom, according to organisers of the event.
Since 2012, the WCM produced by the International Cooperative Alliance [ICA] with the scientific and technical support of the European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises [EURICSE], makes a significant contribution, through economic data collection and thematic analysis, to demonstrating the capacity of cooperative and mutual enterprises to thrive and impact their communities.
This year’s report provides the annual rankings of the Top 300 largest cooperative and mutual enterprises and the rankings by sector. It also contains a focus on benefits to members and the way they communicate their cooperative identity and advantage.
According to the authors of the report, the thematic chapter was developed in collaboration with the International Cooperative Entrepreneurship Think Tank [ICETT] and is the start to a deeper look the group will take into the benefits of membership.
Douglas Jeroem, the Director General of the ICA will make opening remarks while Hans Groeneveld, Director of International Cooperative Affairs at Rabobank and ICET Chairperson will give a keynote address on Cooperatives’ Benefits.
Meanwhile, Kelly Smith, Senior Director of Marketing, Communications and Cooperative Relations of National Coop Grocers [NCG], U.S, and Santosh Shukla, Joint General Manager of Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited [IFFCO], India will present case studies of the two cooperatives respectively.
Gianluca Salvatori, Secretary General of EURICSE, is expected to give closing remarks in the event moderated by Iian Gotz, Project Manager of EURICSE.
WCM is a project designed to collect robust economic, organisational, and social data about cooperatives worldwide. It is the only report of its kind collecting annual quantitative data on the global cooperative movement. It aims to develop a multi-dimensional database reporting on the socio-economic value and impact of cooperatives both within a global scenario and in their regional and national contexts. The World Cooperative Monitor is the successor to the former Global 300 project.
The importance of the World Cooperative Monitor cannot be understated. Not only is it a crucial tool which we can use to raise the profile of cooperatives to policy-makers and industry professionals, but it also provides an incredibly useful starting point for researchers and academics alike…Before the existence of the Monitor, data on cooperatives was patchy at best, but now we have strong empirical evidence that our movement is a global economic player with an important stake in the world’s economy. Cooperatives have been given a precious tool which I strongly encourage them to use to demonstrate how important our enterprise model is,” Dame Pauline Green, former President of the ICA was in the past quoted as saying.
