Lango: Govt injects Shs 74bln in Emyooga Progamme, PDM

LIRA – Government has so far injected Shs 74 billion to support Emyooga Programme and the Parish Development Model [PDM] in the Lango Sub-region.

This was said recently by the government chief whip, Denis Hamson Obua during the launch of the disbursement of Shs 6.9 billion to PDM beneficiaries at Alebtong district headquarters.

The Emyooga Programme was launched in August 2019 as part of the broad government strategy targeting to transform 68 percent of homesteads from subsistence to market-oriented production with the overall objective of promoting job creation and improving household incomes.

On the other hand, the PDM launched in February 2022, aims at moving 3.5 million households trapped in the subsistence economy to the money economy, through commercial production, especially in the agricultural sector.

Obua lauded President Museveni for initiating poverty alleviation programmes in the country, saying government is keen on seeing people live better lives.

“This is a very strategic intervention by the NRM government under President Museveni. People should embrace these programmes to fight poverty in their households,” he said.

According to Alebtong district commercial officer who is also the district PDM focal person, Bob Oluk, the Shs 6.9bln will support 1,122 enterprise groups, as more continue to benefit from the programme.

Obua said the government has sunk Shs 8bln in Alebtong district alone under the PDM and Emyooga programmes.

Oluk said more people in the district are applying to join the PDM SACCO groups to benefit from funds.

He said 69 PDM SACCOs in the district have received a minimum of Shs 72mln of the Shs 100mln each parish is supposed to get. More money expected to come in the current financial year 2023/ 2024.

He urged those who received the money to pay it back when the time comes so that others can also benefit.
