Lango farmers advised to join SACCOs

The advice was given by Flavia Nalubega Ssamula, Information and Communication Manager at Heifer International Uganda.

LIRA, July 18, 2024 – Farmers in Lango Subregion have been urged to join or form Savings and Credit Cooperative organisations [ SACCOs ] to benefit from programmes initiated by government, and development partners.

The advice was given by Flavia Nalubega Ssamula, Information and Communication Manager at Heifer International Uganda, an organisation working to end hunger and poverty in Uganda.

She was speaking days ago to about 9,000 farmers in a farm clinic organised by different partners at Ngetta Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute where farmers were trained in livestock farming, beekeeping, soybean farming, and fish farming among others.

She said Heifer International has moved away from just giving a cow to farmers to capitalising farmers organised in SACCOs. “Please join the existing SACCOs or form a new one to benefit from our services,” she added.

She said her organisation partners with commercial banks to provide loans to the farmers at a very low interest rate, she said, adding that under the partnership with the banks, the farmers can get loans without presenting any collateral.

Nalubega said Heifer International also helps the farmers to get good market for their produce. “We also work with farmers to ensure that they access good markets from their agricultural produce,” she said.

At the same time, Prossy Namyalo, Head of Disbursement at the Bank of Uganda [BoU] called upon businesspeople to take advantage of  the Small Business Recovery Fund [SBRF] to boost their businesses, saying it attracts low interest.

Under the SBRF, Namyalo said, agro-processors, land opening, restocking, and grain trade among others, are supported.
