Lango cultural leader urges women to embrace PDM

KWANIA – The Prime Minister of Lango Cultural Foundation [LCF], Eng. James Robert Ajal has tasked leaders in Lango Sub-region to mobilise women to embrace the Parish Development Model [PDM] to fight poverty.

While speaking on Wednesday at Inomo Secondary School in Kwania District, Ajal said much as government has initiated several poverty alleviation programmes such as the PDM, Emyooga, and Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme [UWEP], several women in Lango Sub-region have not taken advantage of these programmes.

Ajal who was speaking during the school’s PTA annual general meeting noted that there is a need for leaders to sensitise women to join the PDM and access cheap credit to boost their businesses.

“Most women are struggling with their small businesses yet the government has provided billions of shillings which they should use to boost their business. I want to encourage local leaders to encourage these women to join PDM,” he said.

Eng. Ajal also challenged women to be innovative and use technology to foster development.

“No wonder, I want to encourage you to embrace technology because through technology you will be able to establish small-scale businesses to improve household income,” he said.

Joe Robinson Okwir, the head teacher of Inomo Secondary School said most women have taken up the responsibility of paying school fees for their children.

He said there is a need for the government to support women’s saving groups in the villages but also called for the sensitisation of the men to work together with their wives to develop their families.

“The government should get a way of supporting women with tractors for promotion of commercial production because 60 percent of women are farming and they are still using hand hoes, something which has kept them is subsistence farming,” he said.

Geoffrey Eling Owera, the Kwania district LCV chairperson condemned the high level of alcoholism and laziness among men.

“I am concerned that most men have neglected their responsibilities of paying fees for their children and providing for their families and instead they have resorted to drinking. This is backwardness and as leaders, we shall not accept such irresponsible acts,” he said.

“I want to request you to embrace the growing of perennial crops like avocado, coffee, tree planting, and dairy production which last long while harvesting to reduce cases of food insecurity,” he said.

The PDM was launched in 2022 by government, aiming at helping 3.5 million households still trapped in the subsistence economy to the money economy.
