LIR CITY, June 23, 2025 –– Won Nyaci of Tekwaro Lango Eng. Dr Michael Odongo Okune has lauded President Yoweri Museveni for injecting Shs 126 billion under Parish Development Model [PDM[ in Lango Subregion.

Odongo said the government initiative lunched in February 2022, has so far benefitted over 100,000 households in the subregion, with each of the beneficiaries investing the Shs 1 million received from government in enterprises like piggery, poultry, fish farming, among others.

The cultural chief was recently briefing the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi during a meeting at Lango cultural Centre in Lira City.

The minister is in the tour of 16 recognised cultural institutions in the country and delivering President Yoweri Museveni message on the Shs 60 million emoluments given to the country’s cultural institutions.

“I want to thank President Museveni for his wealth creation programmes and according to my record a total of 102,868 households in Lango have benefitted from the PDM, but other programmes are also transforming the lives of our people,” he said.

He also thanked Museveni for his huge contribution to ushered in total peace in northern Uganda, established Lira University, tarmacked Apa-Lira-Kitgum road among other developments.

On the Shs 60 million, Amongi said Museveni has guided that the money be directed to strengthen local languages, preserve, and mobilise people to embrace wealth creation at household levels and deal with repugnant cultural values.

She said there is high poverty at the households yet cultural institutions or leaders are the first line institution that interact with people on daily basis.

“They attend burials, marriage ceremonies and social functions. They should use that function to educate people to uptake government programmes like Parish Development Model, Emyooga programme, Youth Livelihood Programme [YLP], Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme [UWEP] and other wealth creation programmes,” she said.

She also added that repugnant cultural practice such as child marriages where in many areas the custom still dictates that you can marry a girl who has not reached 18 years should be totally abandoned and discouraged.

“There are issue of early pregnancy that is so rampant in the country. His Excellency is saying let these cultural institutions use their system to reform culture that are negative. Let them preach and ensure that issue about teenage pregnancy is abolished,” she added.
